Annualized Income Method
The annualized income installment method (IRS Form 2210, Schedule AI) lets taxpayers with uneven income make smaller estimated payments in low-income quarters and larger payments in high-income quarters. Instead of dividing annual tax into four equal payments, you calculate the tax owed based on income actually received through each quarter's cutoff date, annualize it, then pay the cumulative required amount minus prior payments. This prevents penalties when most income arrives late in the year.
Example
A tax preparer earns 60% of annual income in Q1 (tax season) and little the rest of the year. Using the annualized method, she pays $15,000 for Q1 based on actual income received, then only $2,000 each for Q2–Q4, avoiding the penalty she'd face if required to pay equally.
