Estimated Tax
Estimated tax payments are periodic prepayments of income tax, self-employment tax, and other taxes owed by individuals who don't have enough withheld from paychecks. The IRS requires payments in four installments due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. You're generally required to make estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more after subtracting withholding and credits. Failure to pay enough triggers underpayment penalties calculated on a quarterly basis.
Example
A freelance designer expects to owe $20,000 in federal tax for 2026 and has no employer withholding. She divides $20,000 into four equal payments of $5,000, due April 15, June 16, September 15, and January 15.
