Metal Tier

Metal tiers standardize plan comparison by grouping plans with similar actuarial values. All plans within a tier cover the same percentage of costs on average, though they may structure deductibles, copays, and coinsurance differently. Silver is the benchmark tier: subsidies are calculated against Silver plan costs, and Cost-Sharing Reductions (which lower deductibles and copays for lower-income enrollees) are only available with Silver plans. Bronze plans paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA) can be cost-effective for healthy individuals who want low premiums and tax-advantaged savings. Catastrophic plans are restricted to people under 30 or those with a hardship exemption.

Example

A 35-year-old choosing between tiers in Texas might pay: Bronze $128/month (after subsidy) with a $7,500 deductible, Silver $353/month with a $4,500 deductible, or Gold $520/month with a $1,500 deductible. The right choice depends on expected healthcare usage and risk tolerance.
